Herbert Smith Freehills has been appointed by the Western City & Aerotropolis Authority to advise on all aspects of the master-planning and development of the Western Sydney Aerotropolis.

Centred around the Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport, which is currently under-construction, the Aerotropolis will create a thriving economic hub delivering new jobs, homes, infrastructure and services in Western Sydney.

Globally, aerotropolises have recognised the transformational potential of an airport by establishing infrastructure, land uses and an economy around the airport assets. The Western Sydney Airport is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform the Greater Sydney region in this way.

The Aerotropolis will seek to attract significant players in the defence and aerospace sectors and help establish other specialisations in advanced manufacturing, agribusiness, health, education and science.

The Aerotropolis sits at the heart of the Western Parkland City, which is expected to boast a population of 1.1 million by 2036. In recognition of the catalytic growth that will occur in Western Sydney, the project will see an unprecedented level of collaboration across all three levels of government to streamline planning processes, facilitate private sector investment and secure transformational outcomes.

The team at Herbert Smith Freehills is led by partners Nicholas Carney, Peter Briggs, David Sinn, David Hugo and Philippa Stone.

Mr Carney said, “This is a unique opportunity to assist on the planning and development of a new city and economic centre which will deliver significant economic and social benefits to the residents of New South Wales.”

“We have assembled a cross-disciplinary team which includes experts on master-planning, property development, infrastructure, value capture, smart infrastructure technology to work with government to realise this opportunity.”

Mr Briggs said “It is relatively early days but the Western Sydney Aerotropolis is a great example of what can be achieved when Governments work with the private sector to bring city-shaping projects to life. We are very fortunate to have an opportunity to be involved on a project of this scale, which will have a global impact.”
